Having An IPO for Your Blog

By Ben on August 10, 2006

“Initial Product Offerings” are hugely important for your blog. Whether its a theme, or whether its a helpful pdf, or even selling buttons. You can’t miss out on an opportunity to give something away for free! Or even better sell something if you are an established blog. Here’s what it does. It creates great opportunities for other bloggers to link to you, which in turn will create an increase in traffic, revenue, and readership. It will give something back to the greater blogosphere community. The subscription model of publishing is dead. In the new media landscape its all about paying your readers. No, not in the sense that you actually pay your readers. But giving something worthwhile back to your readers in exchange for them reading, and offering feedback.

Here’s are some great examples of giving back to the blogosphere.
Aaron Wall’s SEO Blog recently released a handy tool.
CopyBlogger released a Viral Report to launch his blog.
9rules’ product is community.

What’s your product? And when will you release it?

I’m seeing new blog networks sprout up in the model of 9rules but with product planning opportunities. Hmm. Interesting. I’m going to push for an Initial Product Offering with this blog. Ben released a kick ass theme before. I know themes work. But I’m not wanting to dev one out. It’s just not my cup of tea.

I dont want to create a product that is over saturated. I think the theme market is still big but almost over saturated. One thing I know about college is people get busy and blogging becomes more work than fun. What if somehow we could develop sites that were more about being smarter and about the longtail. Sites that didn’t take a helluva mount of time?

David,
That’s a kick ass idea. The problem with blogging is coming up with quality content, week after week. Too much work…too little pay.

Refreshing coinage on the IPO application. I’ve definitely seen great success in the releasing-handy-tools arena. Mostly though by tech guys who don’t realize whats happening. They may have AdSense on the site, but sure don’t realize how to better monetize all the traffic their getting.
